Halina Massalska passed away on December 3, 2025, at the age of 85.It is with profound sadness that I bid farewell to Halina Massalska, a longtime journalist for Tygodnik Polski/Polish Weekly, the socio-cultural magazine “Profile,” and Gazeta Toronto, and, above all, my best friend.
She was a valued voice of the Polish community, documenting its life, historical memory, and social issues.
Halina was not only a guardian of the Polish community’s memory but also a person who knew how to listen, support, and share wisdom. Her writings taught us history and responsibility, and her presence in my life was a source of strength and comfort.
She will remain in my memory as a person of truth, culture, and heart. Her passing is a loss for her family in Poland, the Polish community in metro Detroit, but above all for me, as I have lost a friend whose kindness and closeness were invaluable.
The late Halina Massalska focused on history, politics, and national memory. Her articles frequently addressed the Katyn Massacre, the activities of the Polish diaspora in the US and Canada, and reflections on the role of emigration in preserving Polish identity.
She combined journalistic integrity with a deep sense of responsibility for collective memory. Her writing was not only informative but also educational and reflective. Her writings were aligned with the mission of preserving language, culture, and memory in the diaspora.
Halina Massalska was not only a journalist but also the founder and director of the John Paul II Polish Language School in Hamtramck, where she taught as a valued educator. With passion and dedication, she educated young generations in the spirit of Polish culture and values. Her work at the school was a testament to her belief that education is the foundation of identity and community.
In her articles, she recalled history and responsibility, and in the classroom, she taught Polish language, tradition, and pride in Polish heritage. She combined journalistic integrity with a pedagogical heart, becoming a role model and guide for many. To me, she was my best friend – someone whose wisdom, kindness, and presence will remain irreplaceable.
Her legacy remains a testament to how Polish journalism can be not only informative but also a form of service to the nation and the diaspora.

Z głębokim smutkiem żegnam Halinę Massalską, wieloletnią dziennikarkę Tygodnika Polskiego, pisma społeczno – kulturalnego „Profile” i Gazety Toronto, a dla mnie – przede wszystkim – najlepszego Przyjaciela.
Była cenionym głosem Polonii, dokumentującym jej życie, pamięć historyczną i sprawy społeczne.
Halina była nie tylko strażniczką pamięci Polonii, ale także osobą, która potrafiła słuchać, wspierać i dzielić się mądrością. Jej teksty uczyły nas historii i odpowiedzialności, a jej obecność w moim życiu była źródłem siły i otuchy.
Pozostanie w mojej pamięci jako człowiek prawdy, kultury i serca. Jej odejście jest stratą dla Rodziny w Polsce, polonijnej wspólnoty, ale przede wszystkim dla mnie – bo straciłam Przyjaciela, którego życzliwość i bliskość były bezcenne.
Śp. Halina Massalska zajmowała się literaturą, historią, polityką a przede wszystkim pamięcią narodową. W jej artykułach często pojawiały się kwestie związane ze zbrodnią katyńską, działalnością Polonii w USA i Kanadzie, a także refleksje nad rolą emigracji w zachowaniu polskiej tożsamości.
Łączyła rzetelność dziennikarską z głębokim poczuciem odpowiedzialności za pamięć zbiorową. Jej teksty były nie tylko informacyjne, ale także edukacyjne i refleksyjne. Jej teksty wpisywały się w misję podtrzymywania języka, kultury i pamięci w diasporze.
Halina Massalska nie tylko była dziennikarką, ale także założycielką i kierowniczką szkoły jęz. polskiego im. Jana Pawła II w Hamtramck, gdzie pracowała jako ceniony nauczyciel i wychowawca. Z pasją i oddaniem wychowywała młode pokolenia w duchu polskiej kultury i wartości. Jej praca w szkole była świadectwem wiary w to, że edukacja jest fundamentem tożsamości i wspólnoty.
W swoich artykułach przypominała o historii i odpowiedzialności, a w klasie uczyła języka polskiego, tradycji i dumy z polskiego dziedzictwa. Łączyła rzetelność dziennikarską z pedagogicznym sercem, stając się dla wielu wzorem i przewodnikiem.
Dla mnie była najlepszym Przyjacielem – osobą, której mądrość, życzliwość i obecność pozostaną niezastąpione.
Jej dorobek pozostaje świadectwem tego, jak dziennikarstwo polonijne może być nie tylko informacją, ale także formą służby wobec narodu i diaspory.
Cześć Jej pamięci! Pokój Jej duszy!
