(1940 – 2026)

On Monday, March 9, 2026, the Polish American community of Metro Detroit gathered at St. Ann’s Church in Warren to pray for Wallace Michael Ozog, one of our dedicated leaders and cultural guardians. For decades, Ozog stood at the heart of Polonia’s life in the Motor City — connecting generations, strengthening institutions, and ensuring that our heritage remained vibrant, visible, and proudly carried forward.

During the funeral Mass, Fr. Walter Ptak introduced the deceased and his family home to the audience.

Wallace Michael Ozog was born on September 27, 1940, in Detroit, Michigan, into a hardworking Polish‑American family rooted in the immigrant neighborhoods that shaped early Polonia in the Motor City. He was the son of Joseph Ozog and Mary (née Szczypek), both descendants of Polish immigrants who carried forward the values of faith, community, and perseverance. Growing up in Detroit’s post‑war Polish parishes and social clubs, Wally developed a strong sense of identity and responsibility to the community. The traditions, language, and cultural pride nurtured in his family home became the foundation of his lifelong service to Polonia. His parents’ example — their devotion to family, church, and the Polish cause — shaped the leader he would become, guiding him toward a decades-long career of cultural stewardship, organizational leadership, and unwavering commitment to preserving Polish heritage in America.

Born with a deep sense of service, Wally devoted his professional life to the Michigan Department of Social Services, but his true vocation was the community he loved. In Metro Detroit, he became a bridge between parishes, organizations, schools, and families.

His leadership in the Polish Roman Catholic Union of America and his long involvement with the Polish Museum of America in Chicago elevated Detroit’s Polonia on the national stage. Yet, he never stopped working at the grassroots level — attending events, supporting youth programs, cheering on dance ensembles, and encouraging every effort that strengthened Polish identity in our region.

He represented Polonia with dignity before world leaders, including Pope John Paul II and President Lech Wałęsa. Still, he was equally at home at parish festivals, scholarship banquets, and community gatherings, where his warmth, humor, and generosity made him a beloved presence. He believed deeply in education, tradition, and the responsibility to pass on our story.

He served on the Orchard Lake Schools Board of Regents and Board of Polish Mission (PICROL). The family established the Wally and Joann Ozog Endowed Scholarship Fund at Orchard Lake Schools.

For Metro Detroit’s Polonia, Mr. Ozog was a leader who reminded us of who we are and what we can build together. His legacy lives on in the institutions he strengthened, the friendships he nurtured, and the countless lives he touched.

May his memory be a blessing to all who carry forward the work he loved.

Pokój Jego Duszy 🙏
