As Polish Americans, we care deeply about the strategic interests and security of the United States, as we maintain vital ties to Poland. We are uniquely sensitive to American foreign policy that directly affects Central Europe, including Poland, which we hold dear as the place our ancestors called home, and where many of us still have families and friends.
In the September 10th Presidential Debate, while criticizing her opponent’s weak stance on European security, Vice President Kamala Harris made a direct reference to the Polish community in Pennsylvania. She clearly understood Polish Americans’ fear that the Russian invasion of Ukraine signals a similar threat to its neighboring sovereign nations, including Poland. As a result, leaders of the Polish American community in Pennsylvania endorsed Kamala Harris as their candidate for the Presidency of the United States. Soon after, Wisconsin followed suit.
Like Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, Michigan is a swing state, and as Polish Americans of Michigan, our community feels a similar imperative.
Considering the views of both candidates, we cannot fail to see the radical difference between their views on America’s role in the world. Our position is clear. The choice is between Donald Trump’s isolationism, autocratic tendencies, and support for Vladimir Putin and Kamala Harris’s defense of fundamental American values, opposition to dictators, and standing up for democracy and self-determination.
This is not a typical election cycle; this is democracy in crisis. Which candidate is better for America, better for Poland, better for the world? Kamala Harris is the only candidate who guarantees support for Ukraine and who has never questioned America’s fundamental role in the NATO alliance. If the United States does not stand up to Russian aggression, our role as the leader of the free world will be diminished, Russian imperialism will be empowered, and as Kamala Harris has stated, “Poland will be next.”
Vice President Harris recognizes the importance of American leadership and the threat to Central Europe, including Poland, posed by Russian aggression. Therefore, it is in the best interest of the Polish Americans of Michigan to endorse Kamala Harris as the next President of the United States.
